If you’ve considered technical diving, you know that TEC divers utilize double tanks. In the past most TEC Divers wore these tanks on their back in what is referred to as the standard “BackMount” configuration. However, Sidemount is an increasingly popular alternative to those heavy back-mounted double tanks normally utilized in technical diving.
WHY? Side-Mount Diving offers many advantages over back mount. Among these advantages is the fact that the diver doesn’t have to lug around heavy double steel cylinders on his/her back. This is a huge advantage when the water is far from the parking lot. However, there is more to it than just simply moving the tanks from your back to your sides. Among the skills exclusive to side-mount is gas management. Because the cylinders are not connected by a manifold the diver must pay close attention to gas management.
